Event Description
Over the years the dangers and negative health effects associated with mold and materials containing such things as asbestos and lead have heightened our awareness and the need to prevent or manage these contaminates much more conscientiously in the restoration process. In addition to this, buildings constructed prior to 1990 have a greater risk of containing building materials that include hazardous materials and the world of the restoration and insurance industry is very well aware of it.
This presentation will include:
• What contributes to the growth of mold and how it can be prevented
• Where and in what materials are lead and asbestos found
• What is the procedure when hazardous materials are suspect
• How is it effectively and efficiently remediated while reducing risk of liability
• Why is a qualified water damage remediation contractor so important

Understanding and expertise are essential in identifying and reducing the risk and liability associated with restoration when these environmental concerns are present or suspect. The insurance industries knowledge when facing situations that may include these in the restoration process assists in effective communication and realistic timelines, expectations and expenses associated when encountering these on an insured loss.
Instructor: Art Johnson, CR, WLS, CVB
Art has been in the cleaning & restoration industry since 1988. He grew from a 2-person company doing carpet and upholstery cleaning to assisting in the growth of a company with almost 200 employees. He has served the roles of a one-man technician to being the Senior Operations Manager of a large, very successful restoration company.
He is certified by the Restoration Industry Association (RIA) as a Water Loss Specialist and a Certified Restorer, and by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification, as a Master Restorer and Cleaner. He is also a Certified Value Builder Advisor.
With the RIA, Art has proudly served on, and for a time chaired, the Water Loss Institute. He co-chaired the Restoration Council, along with serving as the Environmental Chair for the RIA (ASCR). He was on the RIA Board of Directors, was the first Chair of the RIA Canadian Council and currently services as Council Chair on the Canadian Education Committee.
He has served on the Executive Committee of the BC Association of Restoration Contractors, which is dedicated to improving workplace health and safety in the BC restoration industry.
Art has been published in many industry journals, been featured on numerous news and talk show programs and has presented to various groups including the insurance industry, property owners and managers, and industry specialists.He has also been a leader in dealing with Hoarding claims and has taught on this subject across Canada.
Art is the proud recipient of the 2011 Industry recognized, Martin L. King award for outstanding service to the industry.
This course will assist anyone with an IICRC designation to maintain their CEC requirements and also provide an update on what changes and advances are being made in the restoration industry. This course qualifies for 0.5 CEC Credit for the IICRC.

Cancellation &
Refund Policy



Cancellations received at least 10 business days prior to the course date will result in a full refund.


Cancellations received less than 10 business days but more than 5 full business days prior to the course date are subject to an administration fee of $100 per day for full and half-day seminars, or $25 for breakfast sessions.


Registrants who do not show up for a course, and/or who do not notify ICBA at least 5 full business days prior to the course date will be assessed the full cost of the course. There will be no refunds or credits in this case.


Substitution of attendees is permitted up to and including the day of the course.




ICBA may have to postpone or cancel courses due to insufficient enrolment, in which case ICBA’s liability will be limited to a refund of the registration fee.
